Look at your car in direct sun and you'll often see fine circular scratches around every reflection, like a spiderweb. Those are swirl marks. Along with light scratches, water spot etching and dull, hazy oxidation, they're what makes paint look tired even right after a wash. Paint correction removes them instead of covering them up for a week.
It's done by machine. A polisher and an abrasive compound or polish take off a very thin layer of clear coat, just enough to level out the defects so light reflects cleanly again. Light swirls come out with a one-step polish. Deeper defects need a cutting compound first, then a polish to bring the gloss back. Clear coat is thin, so it's done carefully and only as much as the paint needs.
Most swirl marks come from washing: tunnel washes with brushes, dirty mitts and towels, and wiping dust off dry paint. Dark cars show them the most, and the Southern California sun makes them hard to miss. Once the paint is corrected, it gets wax or sealant on top, or a ceramic coating to keep it looking that way much longer.
Paint correction starts at $500 for a one-step polish on a car or small SUV. Deeper scratches that need compounding and polishing, and bigger vehicles, are priced on the call before anything starts. Polishing needs cool paint and good light, so a garage, carport or covered parking spot is best.

It removes most swirl marks, light scratches, water spots and haze. A scratch that catches your fingernail has usually gone through the clear coat, and polishing can only make it less visible. Those are a job for a body shop, and we tell you which is which before we start.
A one-step polish usually takes most of a day. Paint that needs compounding and polishing takes longer, sometimes two days. You get a time estimate on the call.
Mostly washing. Automatic washes with brushes, dirty mitts and towels, and wiping dust off dry paint all drag grit across the clear coat. Dark cars show it the most.
It's the best time to. Freshly corrected paint is as good as it's going to look, and a coating keeps it that way much longer than wax. Either way, the paint gets wax or sealant before we leave.

For a wash, an interior detail or a full detail, yes. Those jobs don't need a building, they need time, the right supplies and attention. What you skip is the drive and the waiting room.
